Heather
Hello!
My name is Heather Roberson and I am a fourth year Biology major, with a
minor in English. I am currently working in
Dr. Maduro's
lab in the Biology department. Our lab is interested in elucidating
the gene regulatory network that controls cell specification of the
mesendoderm during embryonic development in the nematode, C. elegans. My
current project involves finding and verifying a few of these regulatory
genes targets using basic genetics and molecular biology techniques. If
I'm not in lab or class you can usually find me either training for my
next marathon, reading, writing, or painting. |
Ohi
Hi,
My name is Ohimai Unoje, but everyone calls me Ohi.
I am a 4th year Biochemistry Major, with a minor in
Cell Biology and
Neuroscience. I started working in the MARC U Program in the summer of
2009, working in
Dr. Jolinda A.
Traugh's lab. We study the protein
Kinase, PAK 2, and its substrates in the cell. I want to get a PhD in
Biochemistry and hopefully teach Biochemistry and perform Biochemical
research. When I'm not in the lab or school, I like spending my time
either playing soccer, playing video games, or reading fantasy novels.
If I'm not doing any of those, then I'm definitely sleeping. |
Carmen
Hello,
my name is Carmen Ramirez, and I am a fourth year
Biochemistry Major.
Growing up in a family of four older brothers, I developed an
appreciation for sports, but I enjoy playing basketball the most. I also
like to practice the piano in my free time. I am currently working with
Dr. Jolinda Traugh, and research in our lab involves the study of PAK2,
a protein kinase. PAK2 is a very unique protein kinase in that it is
activated during cell cytostasis and apoptosis. Even more interesting is
that PAK2 is activated by either GTP bound Cdc42 or Caspase 3 cleavage.
As of right now, I am working on the identification of substrates that
are phosphorylated by both Cdc42 and Caspase 3 activated PAK2. So far, I
have obtained some interesting findings, and I am excited to see where
they will lead me. |
Matt
Hello
my name is Matt Valdez. I am currently a Biochemistry major with an
emphasis in medical science. I am a transfer student from Riverside
Community College born and raised in Moreno Valley. I work in
Dr. Margarita Curras-Collazo's lab in the neuroscience department.
Our research focuses on the autocontrol of neuroendocrine cells of the
supraoptic nucleus of the rat hypothalamus involved in the regulation of
hydromineral balance. When I am not in the lab or library I am usually
riding my fixed gear bicycle around town, if the weather permits. |
Rachel
My
name is Rachael Tena and I am a Biological Sciences major. I work in
Dr. Michael Marsella's lab developing a central nervous system drug
that targets depression and anxiety. I grew up in northern California in
the small town of Eureka, CA. In my spare time I enjoy traveling,
swimming, running, playing basketball, and being outdoors. I hope to
continue my education after UC Riverside and use my degrees to obtain a
career in a medical related field. |
Carlos
Hello,
my name is Carlos Hernandez. I am a third year
chemistry major working
in
Dr. Michael Marsella’s Lab. Currently, I work on synthetic melanins
and alternative methods to making indoles. I plan to attend graduate
school to earn a PhD in chemistry with a focus on organic chemistry,
physical chemistry or the material sciences. |
Michelle
Hello.
My name is Michelle Ontiveros and I am a third year Biological Sciences:
Evolution and Ecology major. I participate in the
University Honors
Program here at UCR and my goals for the future are to earn my Ph.D.
in Evolutionary Biology and join a conservation project here in Southern
California. My current research involves hormonal manipulation of female
guppies in order to determine modes of inheritance of male sexual
characteristics. Some organisms evolve much faster than others and we
want to verify which factors or pressures (genetic architecture, natural
selection, sexual selection) contribute most to the speed of evolution
in the guppy system. |
Nolan
My
name is Nolan Ung and I am a fourth year Botany/plant sciences major. My
mentor is
Dr. Harley Smith and our lab studies the molecular mechanisms
that control morphological changes in the shoot apical meristem of
Arabidopsis. My current project involves understanding signaling in the
shoot apical meristem. I enjoy studying Molecular genetics as well as
plant systematics and taxonomy. I hope to pursue my interests in biology
by continuing onto a Ph.d. program after my undergraduate studies.
Outside of academics I enjoy swing dancing and gardening. |
Mari
Hello,
my name is Mari Rosendahl and I am a
Neuroscience major. I was born in
Los Angeles, grew up in Orange County, but now live in Murrieta.
Currently I am working in
Dr. Craig V. Byus' lab in the Biomedical
department, studying the flux of polyamines across the mucosal
epithelium of the proximal colon. I also work part time as a paramedic.
When Im not studying or working I enjoy nothing more than spending time
outdoors with my two dogs, trail running or hiking. |
